LaMalfa: Innovative Wood Products Encourage Forest Health, Rural Economic Growth

Washington, D.C. – Today, the House Agriculture Committee’s Conservation and Forestry Subcommittee held a hearing to examine how innovative wood products can promote rural economies and healthy forests. After the hearing, Subcommittee Ranking Member Doug LaMalfa (CA-1) released the following remarks:
“Federal forest lands are economic drivers for many rural communities, but due to the decline in timber harvest on these lands, jobs and local businesses have diminished. Today’s hearing showed ways we can reverse that trend, including exciting new wood product usages being tested in California’s First District in Yreka. The forest products industry is doing an outstanding job of developing innovative products and techniques that create new markets for timber and biomass. These innovations boost our local economies and strengthen our forests from fire danger by removing and using formerly low-value wood. Combined with the forest management tools in the 2018 Farm Bill, we are on the right track to bring jobs and industry home to our own backyard.” |
